Basket ball is a well loved and widely played sport simply because it is athletic and accessible. It is easy to hang a hoop and practice basket ball by one self or with a small team. Dr. James Naismith, an athletics coach from Canada invented this game when he was asked to create an activity for YMCA trainees to keep them interested and occupied during winter months. The original game had 13 rules that are being followed with minor changes, to this day.
The history of basketball can be said to have been inspired by a game called “Duck on a Rock” played by children. It was played by throwing a rock at an object known as the duck placed on another rock! The first game of basket ball was played in a gym way back in 1892, with a soccer ball and two peach baskets hung from walls. Retrieving the ball after every score was difficult and the open baskets were invented 10 years later.
Tracing the history of football, it is seen that the game has evolved from Rugby which was invented in England in the 1860s. The game goes as far back as the middle ages when a pig bladder filled with air was used like a ball and it had to be carried to some designated spot by a player with out losing it to another, to score a point. An early version of American football is known to have been played in the 1800s in Princeton.
